Tobacco Appeal Bonds

During the 2009 Legislative Session, the Legislature passed a bill (SB 2198) relating to the posting of security with regard to judgments against tobacco companies that were participants in the settlement of the State’s case against tobacco companies, State v. American Tobacco Company, et al., 95-1466H (Fla. 15th Cir. 1995). 

The bill provides a maximum amount of security that must be filed by tobacco companies for any judgment awarded in favor of the former members of the class action in Engle v. Liggett Group, 945 So.2d 1246 (Fla. 2006). 

The tobacco companies must annually provide the Clerk with an accounting of security posted.  Status reports filed are posted below.
